Is it okay to rename a 10mth old dog?
Im getting a little jack russell today
But i don’t really like his name, and I think he suits the name ‘Captain’ because he has a patch over one eye!
is 10mths too old to rename a dog?
It will take time and you have to commit. Our last dog the breeder had given her the nickname Princess and she responded to it. We gave her the formal name Princess Leia (as in star wars) and tried to call her Leia. She never responded to it and only responded to princess. I think if we had tried really hard we could have gotten her to recognize Leia but we just sort of gave up. They are both two syllable words, but I think she could tell the difference. Our dog before though we probably could have called him anything, anytime because he didn’t seem to know his name. So i guess it really depends on the dog.

No, you can rename a dog whenever you want. It will take him time to respond to the new name though.

Who gives a fuck. Its a dog, change his name once a week if you like

Dogs do not remember names or words they remember tone of voice, rhythm and syllables. So as long as you rename him with a word with the same amount of syllables he will be ok.

It depends on how well he knows the name. You could always pick something similar (same ending sound or beginning letter, rhyming, ect.) But, if he does not respond whatsoever, change it immediately.

When we got our Min Pin he was 5 years old and I changed his name because I didn’t like his name which was Douge and I changed his name to Duke

Nope, haha sometimes it just takes some time to come up with the "perfect" name. He will get used to the new home, new people, and new name. Good luck with you’re dog!
Steph | Jul 18, 2009
No – repeated mention of his name and a click/treat every time he looks at you when he reacts to the new name, will make him get used to his new call name in no time.

Perfectly ok i got a dog that was over a year old and changed his name he picked up on it very quickly. I think mostly they just respond to your voice anyways not their name.

well, you can rename the dog anytime.
you dont ve to go to the Embassy and change a passport

If it answers to its new name!
Ida | Jul 18, 2009
Yes. I renamed two, one was 5 months, and the other 7 months when I imported them. A little younger than your puppy, but I don’t think the extra few months would make much difference. It might help to choose a name that sounds similar to the one he had? But just try the new name, and see how it goes.

Yes call him Captain *desired name here* or *desired name here* Captain then when he starts to respond to this a little slowly drop the captain out of his name

wutupwitu | Jul 18, 2009
Well no because he is attached to his name for a while so if I was you I wouldn’t like I renamed my 6 week year old puppy from Moe to Mooshoo (Mushu) but he caught on to it a couple of days later.
Anyway he is 10mths for a sake in the world don’t do it please he will probably never get used to it.

zebraprintprincess | Jul 18, 2009
If called him it that long of a time no but u can rename his middle name
Tate | Jul 18, 2009
I think Captain is a really cute name.
I hope you have lots and lots of energy because your new puppy surely does…and will for a very, very long time!
Congrat’s on your new pup, thank you for adopting and you can always rename a dog. Many dogs in the shelters get renamed all fo the time and they do just fine. Just give him a few days to adjust to it and give him lots of praise and a treat when he responds to it.
JRTs are notoriously smart as well as high energy! Be ready with lots of mental and physical exercise!

ya you can rename him, i got my dog from a shelter when he was a pup, but he had already learned him name, but i didn’t like it, so i just taught him his new name as if it was his first name

if he respnds to the name he has now it would be best NOT to change his name cause it would confuse him so much cause he would also be going to a new home if he doesnt respond verry well to his current name then you can try to change it but it would be best o leave it cause you dont want to stress him out by being in a new home all new smells new people and then .. all of sudden .. he’s not rover any more hes captin and hes not sure what to do …
so it would be best to just leave it

It IS ABsoLUTELY Ok to change the dog’s name. If this is a pure-bred dog, and s/he has a fancy name for his/her blood line, you must keep that name, especially if you plan to show or breed your dog. HOWEVER, owners of fancy-name dogs usually prefer to give their dog a simple name for companionship animals.
That said, you CAN change the dog’s name. Begin by using NO name at all when you want him/her to come, or to obey any other behavior, like SIT, DOWN, COME, QUIET. When the dog has done what you asked, give him/her plenty of praise–get down to the dogs level and make a big fuss in an excited manner. "What a GOOD dog. You are SUCH a special dog!" The dog experiences the reaction S/HE wants (Love and praise). After that goes well for a couple of days, include the dog’s (new) name in your praise session. Such as,
"What a good dog" changes to "What a good NEWNAME!" It won’t take long for the dog to figure out that s/he gets lots of love when you use his/her new name.

It’s always possible to rename dogs. That’s why you can rename shelter dogs whatever you want. It always takes a dog a little while to adjust to a new name. However, if he knows his current name really well, my suggestion would be to add captain to the front of his current name. For example, say "Captain Jack, come" when you call him. Then he’ll get used to the Captain part of his name and if you wanted, you could eventually phase out his old name and just say Captain.

dogs respond to tones and sounds not a specific name. try something that sounds similar. I got a rescue dog called Jasper. I started calling him jasper chew chew then changed it to ginger chew chew cause he chewed my shoes. Then I dropped the chew chew and he responds to Ginger.
