When Stroud kills a guard, he is sentenced to be executed, and only his mother’s impassioned intervention gets his sentence commuted to life imprisonment, which he must serve in solitary confinement. As he serves out his sentence in boredom and despair, one day he finds a helpless baby sparrow in the exercise yard. Stroud soon takes a deep interest in caring for birds, which gives him a new purpose in life, but which also brings new conflicts with prison authorities.

Burt Lancaster, what's your fave films?
Birdman of Alcatraz and Gunfight at the O.K Corral are a couple of mine although for sheer stupidity Tough guys with Kirk Douglas is a fun bored afternoon filler!LOL

Kind regards and seasons greetings

Elric
Edit: Oh yeah that romp in the surf with… was it Deborah Kerr?
Karen: I believe you’re referring to the The Hallelujah Trail, that is also a rather fun film, the Tough guys I’m referring to is an 80’s film about two old cons after one last heist

l liked Trapeze, it also had Tony Curtis in it, and it was directed by Carol Reed, the absolutely gorgeous sex on legs Oliver Reed’s uncle.
Now he was a great actor, the lovely Oliver Reed.

I agree Tough Guys was very good, but I think his best part was as Sergeant Warden in From Here To Eternity.

Tough guys was good and I think you mean the one where they had to transport a wagon train full of whisky?
I also liked the one where he was one of 3 French foreign legion guys.
Childish films by modern standards but he played a strong yet gentle man with morals and strength of character in most of his films.
I just remembered one in which he decided to get home by swimming across every swimming pool between the start point and his own pool. He met a lot of people and as the film progressed you found out more about his Character. I wont spoil the ending.

Birdman of course – BUT he was marvellous in late films like Local Hero (v funny) and as Doc Graham in Field of dreams – I just love him in those parts …shows what a very versatile actor he was!!
A true Hollywood great
